Located in the heart of the city of Ernakulam on Dr. Salim Ali Road and behind the Kerala High Court, Mangalavanam gives green freshness to Ernakulam city. This bird sanctuary is a small, quiet, peaceful forest. Many migratory birds seek sanctuary here throughout the year. Mangalavanam gained importance because of the mangrove vegetation and the congregation of breeding birds that regularly gather there.
It is a nesting ground for a large variety of migratory birds and supports many types of mangroves. Managalavanam is often regarded as the "green lung of Kochi", considering its role in keeping the city's air pollution under check. The area is a roosting place for many kinds of resident and migratory birds.
Early summer months are the best time to visit the sanctuary, especially from mid January to early March.
