Kottakkal, situated 12 km. South West of Malappuram district of Kerala, is synonymous with the word Ayurveda. Kottakkal is the headquarters of the world famous Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, founded by Vaidyaratnam P.S Warrier in 1902.
Kottakal Arya Vaidyasala is the largest institution of this kind and has branches all over India. People from different parts of the world come here for treatment. A medicinal herbal garden, maintained by the Vaidya Sala is also a rare treasure. It now runs a research centre, nursing home, a college of Ayurveda and to promote arts - a Kathakali Academy. Art and culture also flourish in Kottakkal.
The P.S.V. Natyasanghom has a unique place in Kathakali. A Kathakali School is run by the Sanghom. Venkatat Theva Temple, near the Arya Vaidya Sala, is noted for its mural painitings. The Kottakkal Pooram festival attracts thousands. Connoisseurs of music, art, culture and literature of the country, participate in tis cultural mela organized in connection with the pooram.
Annual seminars on Ayurveda and other branches of medicine, conducted as a part of founder’s day of Arya Vaidya Sala, are attended by experts from abroad also. There is an Ayurvedic College at Kottakkal. The Government of Kerala runs the only Ayurveda Mental Hospital of the state, here. Kottakkal is 12 km. West of Malappuram and National Highway-17 passes through Kottakkal.
The famous Kadampuzha Devi Temple is not far from Kottakkal, where devotees come and pray to remove obstacles in life. Dry coconut is the main offering here. The distance from Kadampuzha to Karipur Airport is 13 Km. Tirur Railway station is 16 km away.
