Kavvayi Kayal

Backwater of Kavvayi, natively called and known as Kavvayi Kayal, is one of the must-see backwater destinations in Kannur district. In fact, spreading across to an area of 37 sq km, it is one of the largest wetlands in North Kerala. Like other top backwater destinations in Kerala, Kavvayi too has some unique features that make it more attractive.

A walk along the shores or a pleasure boating trip on Kavvayi Lake is as interesting as that they surely will make the tourists fall in love with this beautiful backwater that is well-adorned with charming sceneries and serene nature. The backwaters of Kavvayi is formed by five rivers - Kavvayi river and its four tributaries viz. the Vannathichal, Kuppithodu, Kuniyan and the Kankol.

Tourists who visit the site is thrilled, for sure, exploring the wide variety of flora as well as fauna that Kavvayi backwaters hold for them in its islands.This backwater destination has six islands and each of which remains unique in beauty and the available flora and fauna. They do play a great role in attracting thousands of tourists to the site.

The best way to explore the great charm of Kavvayi Kayal would be a trip on boat from Kotti to Kottappuram. This trip would be the most ideal one as it would enable the visitors to behold some inspiring sceneries which will remain in mind as ever cherishable memories.
